Project Overview
Built in the vicinity of the old Denver trolley barns,
AJI transformed the site into softball and rugby fields and two-time NCAA Division
II Field of the Year.
Originally a dump site and rail yard this site required careful work around existing
utilities and buried debris. This project was a combination of new construction and
renovation of existing fields to provide a more durable playing surface while using
less water. Our work included removal and disposal of the existing baseball field,
running track, and other amenities such as storage buildings, baseball dugouts and
hundreds of feet of old fencing. The new site requires us to import hundreds of
yards of structural fill through the busy streets of downtown Denver. After the
installation of a complicated drainage system, a prescription sand base and sod
were installed on a laser grade. In addition to all these components, electrical
and storm drainage utilities were upgraded for the entire site.
Auraria now enjoys the use of regulation softball, baseball and 3 soccer/rugby fields
for intercollegiate competition and instructional use.
This baseball field was selected Division II Field of the Year by Sports Turf Magazine.
Project Highlights:
Major components of work included earthwork,
custom drainage system with sand root zone, reconfiguring the existing track and building a complete baseball field.
Owner: Colorado University Denver
Project Value: 1.26M.
